IIT teachers to work on 'empty stomach'

New Delhi: Almost all teachers of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will attend office and take classes on Thursday while they hold a hunger strike, after the government rejected their demand for a better pay packet."We submitted a fresh memorandum on Tuesday to the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry but have not received any reply. We will go ahead with our protest," M. Thenmozi, head of the IIT faculty federation, told sources on Wednesday.Over 1,300 teachers of these premier institutes will be part of the protest.On Monday, the faculty federation had decided to go on hunger strike Thursday to reinforce their demands for a better pay packet, get relaxation in teachers appointment and disapproval of a 40 percent cap on the promotion of professors.HRD Minister Kapil Sibal had Tuesday said: "The faculty behaviour doesn't meet IIT standards."
