Horticulture is the branch of Agricultural Science that deals with the cultivation of plants, vegetables, flowers, fruits, herbs, shrubs, bushes, ornamental trees and landscaping for gardens, maintaining nurseries, green houses, gardens, orchards and plantations and also floriculture or cultivation of flowers.
The branch now has also direct or indirect application in food technology industries as Production, harvesting and storing of vegetables all are highly mechanized and merges into food technology. Plants are grown under strictly controlled conditions using sophisticated sensors, computers. Biological control of pests and diseases is common.
Courses & Eligibility
Entry to this field starts from undergraduate level. After completion of 10+2 in Science stream (class 12th) with physics, chemistry and maths/biology/agriculture as the subjects one can opt for Bachelors degree in Horticulture as a separate discipline or as a subject of BSc Agriculture Science. The same basic qualifications are required for doing a diploma in agriculture.
Most of the educational institutions in India teach horticulture as a part of the agricultural Science, while some offer a separate B.Sc. degree. Candidates can choose between doing a B.Sc. in agriculture or horticulture. After doing BSc in Horticulture one can continue his/her further study in the field by doing MSc or PhD.
The minimum qualification for admission to various Master’s programmes in agriculture is 60 per cent marks or equivalent in graduation in same or related streams. For instance, in order to get admission to MA in Pomology; Floriculture and Landscaping; or Vegetable Crops a B.Sc degree in Agriculture or Horticulture is required.
Career Prospects
Horticulture is a field that holds ample scope. Whether you want to be full-time or part-time horticulturist, whether you have your own piece of land or not, you can take up this line and make a decent living out of it.
This career is extremely lucrative since not only are the demands for good plants, flowers, fruits increasing but the technology (in terms of preserving these perishable products) too is becoming more sophisticated which ensures better results. The export industry is also helping build up the number of available jobs.
The demand of a commercial horticulturist in today’s rapidly growing horticulture industry has increased considerably. The monthly remuneration of an Asst. horticulture inspector (appointed by respective state or central government) starts from Rs 7000 and goes up to Rs 17, 000 depending upon experience and total years of service. District Horticulture Officers get monthly salary more than Rs 20, 000. The salary of Horticulturists and scientists varies between Rs 18, 000 and 25, 000.
The salary of horticulture professionals in private sector is more as compared to public sector. They get handsome salary apart from other benefits as fixed by the respective firm/company.

Career in Plant Pathology a branch of agricultural science (average annual salary $25,000-$45,000)


Introduction
Plant Pathology is a branch of agricultural science that deals with the study of fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, and other microbes that cause diseases of plants. The branch focuses on understanding how hosts, pathogens, and environments interact to cause plant diseases and on understanding how to control plant diseases. A plant pathologist is a person who specializes in plant health much similar to a physician who specializes in human health or a veterinarian in animal health.
With this agricultural technology option, students who wish to work for various commodity, seed, and agri-chemical industries learn to apply these principles to scientific agriculture and plant medicine. Under the biotechnology option, students learn to apply these principles to modern biology and plant medicine. The latter option is recommended for students who wish to go on to graduate school or go to work right away in biotechnological firms, universities, or research laboratories.
Courses & Eligibility
In India, there are 34 state agricultural universities, 3 deemed agricultural universities and 3 central universities offering courses in different disciplines of at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Apart from offering as an optional subject, few universities offer specialized course in both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The admission can be obtained through All India Combined Entrance and State level Entrance Examinations conducted separately. The All India Entrance is being held regularly by the ICAR that also provides  the JRF scholarships to students.
Career Prospects
The scope of employment for graduates is available both at public and private sectors. One can also start his/her business after completing the course.
graduates can join as a Plant Geneticist, Plant Breeder, Aquatic Botanist, Limnologist, Physiologist, Plant Pathologist, Professor, Consultant, and Agricultural Engineer or Inspector at district and state level.

Pay-Package
Plant pathologists find jobs mainly in research labs, agricultural development organizations under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) as well as in universities as teachers/professors. The salary varies between Rs 15, 000 – Rs 25,000.
One who qualifies Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) can perform research work in this field. The fellowship is Rs 10, 000 per month.
The average annual salary of a Plant Health Management associate in foreign countries including US varies from $25,000-$45,000.

Career in Veterinary Science ( treating and curing the diverse types of diseases of birds and animals )


Veterinary Science is the science of treating and curing the diverse types of diseases of birds and animals. The basic principles of this specialized branch of study are quite similar to that of human medical sciences. The primary objective of both is the prevention and elimination of maladies and ultimately restoration of the biological organisms to perfect health.
Now, there is a growing demand for veterinarians in India. More and more students are taking this field by realizing its future prospects. People both in rural and urban area are keeping pets, both for livelihood and protection. Veterinarians can choose to work in urban areas, where the work would mostly include the care and handling of domestic pets or with the government’s animal husbandry departments or in animal care centers.
Courses & Eligibility
To be eligible for the Bachelor’s in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry course, a candidate should have passed the class 12th (+2) examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Career in Aeronautical Engineering - Details


Aeronautical Engineering is one of the frontier branches of engineering dealing with the study of the principles and technology to design, manufacture and maintain highly sophisticated products such as aircraft, missiles and space satellites. Government of Maharashtra conducts a single combined Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET) for admission to all Health Sciences, Engineering and Pharmacy degree courses in government/government aided colleges and in a few unaided private colleges who have accepted MHT-CET, located within Maharashtra. The Director, Medical Education and Research, Mumbai is the organizing body for MHT-CET.

Eligibility for Admission to Health Science Courses
  • The candidate must have passed the both the SSC or equivalent examination and HSC/12th Standard examination from an Institution situated in the state of Maharashtra with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany & Zoology)
  • The candidate must be an Indian National.
  • The candidate should have attended 17 years of age at the time of admission.

Examination Pattern
  • MHT-CET is a multiple choice objective type test to be answered in an OMR answer sheets.
  • MHT-CET consists of three question papers of one and half hours duration each having maximum of 100 marks.
  • Paper I consists of Physics and Chemistry each having maximum of 50 marks.
  • Paper II consists of Biology (Botany & Zoology each having maximum of 50 marks).
  • Paper III consists of only Mathematics of 100 marks.
  • Candidates desirous of selection to Health Science and BVSc & AH courses should appear for Paper I & Paper II.
  • Candidates desirous of selection to Engineering degree courses should appear for Paper I and Paper III.
  • Candidates desirous of selection to Pharmacy degree course should appear for Paper I & Paper-II and/or Paper-III.
  • There is no negative marking for wrong answers.

Syllabus of Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany & Zoology) and Mathematics for the MHT-CET is the same as for the HSC Examination of HSC Board of Maharashtra. The test consists of three papers as mentioned below.
  • Paper I: Physics & Chemistry (50 marks each)
  • Paper II: Biology (Botany & Zoology – 50 marks each)
  • Paper III: Mathematics (100 Marks)
