With the "4G" wars heating up, we're facing some exciting and interesting battles for 2011. Sprint may have been first out of the gate with its WiMax network and the launch of the HTC Evo 4G and Samsung Epic 4G, but now Verizon and T-Mobile have crashed the party.

Verizon lit up its 4G network in 38 markets and in more than 60 airports on December 5 and plans to blanket the entire country over the next 18 months. Though Verizon didn't reveal any LTE handsets at the time--just two USB modems--the carrier did say that it would talk about "consumer-oriented smartphones" at CES 2011.

Indeed, Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg is scheduled to give the opening keynote on January 6, and the carrier is planning a press conference for later that day. We're sure that we'll hear about new handsets at both events, though details are few at this point. Images of an LTE smartphone from LG have leaked onto the Web already, but we expect three or four additional devices from Big Red.

In addition to Verizon, T-Mobile also will be holding an event at CES, where it plans to talk more about its HSPA+ network and upcoming 4G products. Yes, there's debate (mostly in the tech world) about whether T-Mobile should even call its HSPA+ network 4G, since it's more of an evolution of its 3G network, but the carrier is running with it and has launched a not-so-subtle ad campaign and several accompanying products, including the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G and the T-Mobile G2.

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. The Android SDK provides the tools and APIs necessary to begin developing applications on the Android platform using the Java programming language.

Applications

Application Framework

By providing an open development platform, Android offers developers the ability to build extremely rich and innovative applications. Developers are free to take advantage of the device hardware, access location information, run background services, set alarms, add notifications to the status bar, and much, much more.
Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. The application architecture is designed to simplify the reuse of components; any application can publish its capabilities and any other application may then make use of those capabilities (subject to security constraints enforced by the framework). This same mechanism allows components to be replaced by the user.
Underlying all applications is a set of services and systems, including:

• A rich and extensible set of Views that can be used to build an application, including lists, grids, text boxes, buttons, and even an embeddable web browser
• Content Providers that enable applications to access data from other applications (such as Contacts), or to share their own data
• A Resource Manager, providing access to non-code resources such as localized strings, graphics, and layout files
• A Notification Manager that enables all applications to display custom alerts in the status bar
• An Activity Manager that manages the lifecycle of applications and provides a common navigation backstack

Libraries

Android includes a set of C/C++ libraries used by various components of the Android system. These capabilities are exposed to developers through the Android application framework. Some of the core libraries are listed below:

• System C library - a BSD-derived implementation of the standard C system library (libc), tuned for embedded Linux-based devices
• Media Libraries - based on PacketVideo's OpenCORE; the libraries support playback and recording of many popular audio and video formats, as well as static image files, including MPEG4, H.264, MP3, AAC, AMR, JPG, and PNG
• Surface Manager - manages access to the display subsystem and seamlessly composites 2D and 3D graphic layers from multiple applications
• LibWebCore - a modern web browser engine which powers both the Android browser and an embeddable web view
• SGL - the underlying 2D graphics engine
• 3D libraries - an implementation based on OpenGL ES 1.0 APIs; the libraries use either hardware 3D acceleration (where available) or the included, highly optimized 3D software rasterizer
• FreeType - bitmap and vector font rendering
• SQLite - a powerful and lightweight relational database engine available to all applications

Android Runtime

Android includes a set of core libraries that provides most of the functionality available in the core libraries of the Java programming language.
Every Android application runs in its own process, with its own instance of the Dalvik virtual machine. Dalvik has been written so that a device can run multiple VMs efficiently. The Dalvik VM executes files in the Dalvik Executable (.dex) format which is optimized for minimal memory footprint. The VM is register-based, and runs classes compiled by a Java language compiler that have been transformed into the .dex format by the included "dx" tool.
The Dalvik VM relies on the Linux kernel for underlying functionality such as threading and low-level memory management.

Linux Kernel

Android relies on Linux version 2.6 for core system services such as security, memory management, process management, network stack, and driver model. The kernel also acts as an abstraction layer between the hardware and the rest of the software stack.

Portable Document Format ....

Portable Document Format (PDF) is an open standard for document exchange. The file format created by Adobe Systems in 1993 is used for representing two-dimensional documents in a manner independent of the application software, hardware, and operating system.[2] Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout 2D document that includes the text, fonts, images, and 2D vector graphics which compose the documents. Lately, 3D drawings can be embedded in PDF documents with Acrobat 3D using U3D or PRC and various other data formats.

PDF's adoption in the early days of the format's history was slow.[7] Adobe Acrobat, Adobe's suite for reading and creating PDF files, was not freely available; early versions of PDF had no support for external hyperlinks, reducing its usefulness on the Internet; the larger size of a PDF document compared to plain text required longer download times over the slower modems common at the time; and rendering PDF files was slow on the less powerful machines of the day. Additionally, there were competing formats such as Envoy, Common Ground Digital Paper, Farallon Replica and even Adobe's own PostScript format (.ps); in those early years, PDF was popular mainly in desktop publishing workflows. In 1995, AT&T Labs commenced work on another electronic document standard targeted at libraries and archives for preserving their books and documents, DjVu. This standard has evolved into the .djv/ .djvu format, which has had growing success and penetration in the online world for eBooks, catalogs, and image-sharing.
Adobe soon started distributing its Acrobat Reader (now Adobe Reader) program at no cost, and continued supporting the original PDF, which eventually became the de facto standard for printable documents on the web (a standard web document).

The PDF specification has changed several times and continues to evolve as new versions of Adobe Acrobat are released. There have been nine versions of PDF with corresponding Acrobat releases:

Windows Installer (PHP 5.1.0 and earlier)

            The Windows PHP installer is available from the downloads page at » http://www.php.net/downloads.php. This installs the CGI version of PHP and for IIS, PWS, and Xitami, it configures the web server as well. The installer does not include any extra external PHP extensions (php_*.dll) as you'll only find those in the Windows Zip Package and PECL downloads.

Note:

While the Windows installer is an easy way to make PHP work, it is restricted in many aspects as, for example, the automatic setup of extensions is not supported. Use of the installer isn't the preferred method for installing PHP.

First, install your selected HTTP (web) server on your system, and make sure that it works.

Run the executable installer and follow the instructions provided by the installation wizard. Two types of installation are supported - standard, which provides sensible defaults for all the settings it can, and advanced, which asks questions as it goes along.

The installation wizard gathers enough information to set up the php.ini file, and configure certain web servers to use PHP. One of the web servers the PHP installer does not configure for is Apache, so you'll need to configure it manually.

Once the installation has completed, the installer will inform you if you need to restart your system, restart the server, or just start using PHP. 

Warning

Be aware, that this setup of PHP is not secure. If you would like to have a secure PHP setup, you'd better go on the manual way, and set every option carefully. This automatically working setup gives you an instantly working PHP installation, but it is not meant to be used on online servers.

        The PHP development team would like to announce the immediate availability of PHP 5.3.3. This release focuses on improving the stability and security of the PHP 5.3.x branch with over 100 bug fixes, some of which are security related. All users are encouraged to upgrade to this release.
Backwards incompatible change:

• Methods with the same name as the last element of a namespaced class name will no longer be treated as constructor. This change doesn't affect non-namespaced classes. namespace Foo;

  There is no impact on migration from 5.2.x because namespaces were only introduced in PHP 5.3.

Security Enhancements and Fixes in PHP 5.3.3:

• Rewrote var_export() to use smart_str rather than output buffering, prevents data disclosure if a fatal error occurs (CVE-2010-2531).
• Fixed a possible resource destruction issues in shm_put_var().
• Fixed a possible information leak because of interruption of XOR operator.
• Fixed a possible memory corruption because of unexpected call-time pass by refernce and following memory clobbering through callbacks.
• Fixed a possible memory corruption in ArrayObject::uasort().
• Fixed a possible memory corruption in parse_str().
• Fixed a possible memory corruption in pack().
• Fixed a possible memory corruption in substr_replace().
• Fixed a possible memory corruption in addcslashes().
• Fixed a possible stack exhaustion inside fnmatch().
• Fixed a possible dechunking filter buffer overflow.
• Fixed a possible arbitrary memory access inside sqlite extension.
• Fixed string format validation inside phar extension.
• Fixed handling of session variable serialization on certain prefix characters.
• Fixed a NULL pointer dereference when processing invalid XML-RPC requests (Fixes CVE-2010-0397, bug #51288).
• Fixed SplObjectStorage unserialization problems (CVE-2010-2225).
• Fixed possible buffer overflows in mysqlnd_list_fields, mysqlnd_change_user.
• Fixed possible buffer overflows when handling error packets in mysqlnd.

Key enhancements in PHP 5.3.3 include:

• Upgraded bundled sqlite to version 3.6.23.1.
• Upgraded bundled PCRE to version 8.02.
• Added FastCGI Process Manager (FPM) SAPI.
• Added stream filter support to mcrypt extension.
• Added full_special_chars filter to ext/filter.
• Fixed a possible crash because of recursive GC invocation.
• Fixed bug #52238 (Crash when an Exception occured in iterator_to_array).
• Fixed bug #52041 (Memory leak when writing on uninitialized variable returned from function).
• Fixed bug #52060 (Memory leak when passing a closure to method_exists()).
• Fixed bug #52001 (Memory allocation problems after using variable variables).
• Fixed bug #51723 (Content-length header is limited to 32bit integer with Apache2 on Windows).
• Fixed bug #48930 (__COMPILER_HALT_OFFSET__ incorrect in PHP >= 5.3).
