UCWeb 8.0 browser for Android phones launched in India

UCWeb, a Chinese mobile browser maker, has launched the UCWeb 8.0 browser for the Android phones. As the firm points out, the browser compresses mobile data usage by up to 90 percent thus allowing users to save on their data bills. The earlier versions of this browser are compatible with platforms such as Symbian, Android, iPhone, Java, MTK and Brew. The company also mentioned that the UCWeb browser has been downloaded for about 1 billion times worldwide with over 200 million users. Currently UCWeb is the second most popular mobile browser in Indonesia, Russia and India right after Opera, which holds the top position. “We are looking to reach out 100 million users in India by 2015,” said UCWeb Director for International Strategic Cooperation, Robert Tanner.

Nokia launches C2-00, X1-01 dual-SIM phones

Nokia today unveiled two dual-SIM phones in India – the C2-00 and the X1-01, priced between Rs 2,000-Rs 3,000. Both the models can remember settings of up to five SIM cards and the user does not have to configure them each time a new SIM is inserted.

The Nokia C2-00 (which you can see on the left side of the image) has a 1.8-inch display and offers features like Bluetooth, GPRS, FM radio, expandable memory up to 32 GB, 3.5 mm audio jack, VGA camera, web browser and an expected talk-time of up to 5.75 hours. It will be available in 4 colors – Dynamic Grey, Jet Black, Magenta and Snow White.

Sprint makes Froyo official for your Samsung Epic 4G

The Samsung Epic 4G came into this world with much anticipation. Being the Sprint version of the Samsung Galaxy S line having a full slide out QWERTY and 4G capabilities make this Epic 4G well…epic in its own right. Unfortunately however the Epic 4G did not ship with the then available Android version 2.2 and may have lost a few sales because of it. Well most all high end phones get an update and it seems that the Epic 4G will now have its chance to taste the sweetness of Google’s Froyo.
An official update to the Epics 4G OS is indeed a long awaited update and will be made available on February 21^st, this according to a post made in Sprints forums by and admin for the company, it reads like this;
“Android 2.2/Froyo will be pushed to Sprint Samsung Epic 4G customers beginning Feb. 21. All users should have access to Android 2.2 by Feb. 25.”
“New Samsung Epic 4G MR EB13=upgrade to Android 2.2/Froyo, many updates including Flash Player 10.1, Bluetooth dialing, allows app installs to external storage”
The average user rating on this post within the forums is at 5 stars with 4 ratings at the time and for good reason. So Epic 4G users check you updates within the next few days as the taste of Froyo for the first time is delicious. With Gingerbread looming its head it’s safe to say Froyo is a bit 2010’ish but better late than never. Expect a speed boost in overall performance as well as full Flash content and apps to SD which is priceless. The Sanyo Zio is also rumored to be getting this update in the near future.
It’s been a long 7 months to those Epic 4G users in the know, however embrace it as the next Android upgrade may force you into buying a new device all together. Props goes out to Sprint for pushing out this update as most other carriers seem to be neglecting the Galaxy S line up in regard to Froyo.

Motorola’s Lockable/Unlockable Xoom Tablet gets Official Pricing and makes a Gold Studded Appearance at the Oscar’s

The new Motorola Xoom tablet has been arguably the most anticipated tablet in recent memory, outside of the Apple iPad two of course. The new Xoom gets its official pricing today and it’s not cheap, but one quick glance at its specs, it surely seems worth it to me. Recently Sanjay Jha spoke about the Xoom’s pricing listing the Xoom unsubsidized at around $799 and Wi-Fi only at $600. Today Verizon the premier carrier of the device announced its real ‘official’ pricing. On a new two year contract the Xoom will run you about $600 bucks and un-subsidized the Xoom will be $799.99. If you are considering a new Xoom keep in mind that Verizon’s data service packs start at $20 a month for 1GB on 3G.

Motorola in the past has been criticized for their extra efforts to keep their devices locked up real tight with encrypted boot loaders making root and super user access a bit more difficult to obtain. In response to that Motorola stated that they will be attempting to meet developers (and users in the know) half way. Most assumed a banishment of encryption all together. Today via Twitter it seems that the truth on the Xooms security settings has been revealed, exposing some goodness to developers and ‘super users’ alike. The tweet to a curious customer stated “the XOOM will have an unlockable/relockable bootloader that will enable developers to access hardware for development”. As the new Xoom is vanilla Android this was to be assumed, however reassurance from the horse mouth surely makes this tablet a bit desirable to many in the know.
Last and least, the Xoom will be making a red carpet appearance decked out for the occasion in gold. In the past few weeks we have seen some silver Xoom’s pop up, today however a rather pale gold version ofthe Xoom is showing face. Unfortunately it’s kind of out of reach for us normal folks. The gold Xoom and all its accessories pictured to the right will be given to hosts and nominees of the upcoming Oscars. Not all category however, just those who are up for the Best actor/actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress and the Best Director. This leaves me to ponder how much we will see these on Ebay for.

India launch of Microsoft Windows Phone 7 this year

Microsoft plans to launch its Windows Phone 7 and search engine Bing in the Indian market this year, an official said here Wednesday.

The software major’s India development centre has fine-tuned the innovative applications of Bing for its launch in India.

“Windows Phone 7 will be launched in a few months but the date has not yet been decided,” Amit Chatterjee, managing director of Microsoft India Development Centre (MSIDC), told reporters.

He did not agree that Windows Phone 7 already launched abroad is heavy and slow. “A number of products are to suit the demands of a billion satisfied customers all around the world. We are making all efforts to give them a brand new visual experience,” he said.

He said the device allows Microsoft to bring together its assets like Office, Explorer and search engine Bing. The applications range from simple to those with more work flow.

Windows Phone 7 has already been launched in the US and other countries with its global partner HTC. Windows Phone 7 and Bing are two of the focus areas of MSIDC.

Chattterjee, who recently succeeded Srini Koppulu as the MD, termed Bing as a decision engine, quite different from the other search engines.

On cloud computing, Chatterjee said it offered great opportunity and MSIDC has a team focusing only on cloud computing.

Chatterjee said the centre has contributed to 270 patents filed during last five years.

He denied that Microsoft downsizing workforce elsewhere had any impact on MSIDC here. “We will continue our robust campus hiring. We will continue to recruit 150 to 170 graduates every year from the campuses across India,” he said.

One of Microsoft’s largest product development centres outside Redmond, MSIDC along with its Bangalore unit has a strong team of 1,650 employees and is developing new products and technologies for the global Microsoft portfolio.

HP unveiled TouchPad, Two Smartphones Veer and Pre3

HP introduced their new tablet HP TouchPad and it also announced two smartphone under the Palm OS HP Veer and HP Pre3. Hewlett-Packard known as HP recently acquired Palm and developed these new products under this unit.

HP tries to position itself in the tablet market where many global players are still diving into this market pool. Dell Streak 7 Offers Solid Tablet Experience, with Android 2.2 Quirks

Dell's newest tablet, the Streak 7, is aimed at the increasingly competitive market for 7-inch tablets. Running Android 2.2 

("Froyo"), and backed with a dual-core 1GHz Nvidia Tegra processor, the device will compete directly against the Samsung Galaxy Tab and RIM's upcoming PlayBook, and in the broader tablet category against the bestselling Apple iPad. Dell has suggested that the Streak 7 will receive over-the-air software updates, meaning it could upgrade soon to tablet-centric Android 3.0 ("Honeycomb")—which, being optimized for larger screens, means that users could conceivably get more from their applications. Dell's previous effort, the 5-inch Streak, tried to walk the tightrope between smartphone and tablet. The Streak 7, by contrast, feels like a pure tablet. The screen makes e-reading an eyestrain-free experience, and the processor means that heavier-duty functions such as video and games perform without a stutter. That being said, the screen seems a bit dimmer than rival offerings, and certain features—most notably the camera—could use some improvement. But as tablets go, Dell's latest is a solid offering in a category still struggling to define itself. The Streak 7 sells for $199.99 with a two-year T-Mobile contract, or $449.99 unlocked.

Melbourne: Believe it or not, mobile phones say quite a lot about their owners, says a new study. Social analyst David Chalke said a person's mobile

phone could give outsiders insight into their attitudes towards work, rest and play.

"Twenty years ago when you said 'your phone', you meant the white Telecom commander on the wall in the kitchen, but it doesn't mean that at all now it means your social accessory.

"People always used to say it about cars, 'you drive what you are' and now your phone represents what you are," he was quoted by the 'Courier Mail' as saying.

In fact, a research by Roy Morgan revealed most attributes differed between the owners of mobile phone brands. The typical iPhone user thinks computers give them control over their lives. "iPhone is the Alfa Romeo," Chalke said.

SonyEricsson users like a full social life and fast food. Users of an LG handset are usually women aged 14 to 24, not mechanically minded and unlikely to have pay TV. "LG is the Kia", Chalke said.

Samsung users tend to be conservative dressers over 50 who don't like taking risks. "Samsung is the Daihatsu." Blackberry users are high-earners aged 35 to 49. Nokia users are unlikely to be aged 14 to 24 and less likely to have played arcade video games in the past three months, according to him. "Nokia is the security blanket , it is the Toyota of phones", Chalke said.

Govt announces new telecom policy

Govt announces new telecom policy : 2G: govt move on spectrum may increase tariffs

New Delhi: Now getting a licence doesn't mean you get spectrum anymore. This unlike during A Raja's regime when spectrum allocated was 4.4 Mhz with entitlement upto 6.2 Mhz.

Now mobile companies will have to pay as per market rates. 89 licences can be cancelled by Supreme Court where the matter is pending. Telecom sources say that number of service providers in a circle could be curtailed which could raise mobile charges.

The Central Government on Saturday finally acted on the 2G spectrum front with Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal announcing that spectrum will now be delinked from licensing and awarded on market-based pricing mechanism.

"We will delink licence from spectrum in the New Telecom Policy. The licence will be awarded on market-based pricing mechanism. TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) will give recommendations on mechanism need to move towards a truly inclusive policy," said Sibal in New Delhi on Saturday.

Sibal announced that the Government has decided to provide adequate spectrum to the operators and is seeking a plan of action from the regulator (TRAI) on this.

While pointing out the telecom has been the fastest growing sector, Sibal claimed that the old telecom policy had achieved its objective while spelling out the contours of the new guidelines.

"Telecom is the fastest growing sector and we have achieved the objectives of the telecom policy. We are contemplating a new policy and we will be coming up with it sometime in 2011. We need directional shift from the old policy. The Government proposes to cancel some licences and new licences will be offered under the new policy. Licences issued will be in nature of unified service and licence holder is free to offer any service," he said.
