SSC, HSC exams from March 5, 2012

Wednesday, January 04, 2012
AHMEDABAD: Board exams of class X and XII will begin from March 5, 2012. The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary education Board (GSHSEB) has scheduled the exams a week earlier compared to last year when the exam were held on March 12.
Board officials said that 9.5 lakh students will appear in SSC exams while 3.25 lakh students will appear in the HSC exams. Officials said that the detailed programme including the time table of the exams will be declared on Monday.
Meanwhile, the GSHSEB will conduct the second semester exams of class XI (science) stream from April 16, 2012.
The Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET) for HSC (science) students will be held on April 5, 2012. The marks scored in this exam will be used for admission to professional courses including medical, engineering and pharmacy.
Officials said that the SSC and HSC exams have been scheduled in such a way that the students get a holiday ahead of each main paper so that they get enough time to prepare for the exams and are not stressed to revise the course within limited hours. The board exams will be completed by March 21, 2012.
The schools will then schedule their final school exams in April. In February, the schools will organize the prelim exams.
Like last year, nearly 50 per cent of the questions of SSC exams will be multiple choice questions and will be checked through Optical Mark Reader (OMR).
The schools will be required to conduct the exams of two optional subjects of SSC and submit the marks obtained to the board.
Officials said that planning of the SSC and HSC exam schedule early enables both students and the board to prepare for the board exams better. Since the exam dates are known, the result and resultant admission timings can also be planned, officials said.

National medical entrance test on May 13

Sunday, November 06, 2011
NAGPUR: With the Medical Council of India announcing the date for a pan India CET and the revised syllabus, the stage is now set for the crucial court battle between the apex body and Maharashtra over the proposed common medical entrance exam. The new syllabus was put up on the MCI website late on Thursday night and on Friday it announced May 13 as the date for the exam.

Despite opposition from various states, the MCI has ahead and announced that it will hold the exam next year. The final syllabus for the exam, officially being called the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for under graduates (NEET-UG), has also been released by the MCI after making various changes.

Sangeeta Sharma, MCI secretary, said, "The final syllabus was modified after taking into account lot of suggestions from concerned stakeholders."

The date is something which Maharashtra is not comfortable with. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research had always maintained that holding the NEET-UG earlier than 2013 will be detrimental to students from the state. Dr Pravin Shingare, the DMER, said, "We have approached the Supreme Court and expect that the hearing should take place within a couple of days. Even though the MCI has announced the dates, we are appealing to the court to push it back by a year."

The date has become the bone of contention between the two because of the state syllabus for Std XII. The Maharashtra education board has started incorporating the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) framework and Std XII will be covered from next year. With the NEET-UG based mostly on NCERT, the state feels that its students will be ready for NEET-UG only by 2013.

It is not the state government alone which is heading to court, a group of parents from Nagpur are also set to file a separate appeal. Dr Nandini Babhulkar, a member of the group, said, "We were waiting for MCI to announce the date as the SC would not have entertained our appeal without it. Now on Monday we will be approaching SC and asking for a deferment of at least a year. How can the MCI expect students to study with just 150 days remaining? We support MCI's initiative but all we ask is the NEET-UG date to be pushed till 2013."

Earlier this year the SC had given a green signal to MCI for holding the NEET-UG. Following this the MCI stepped up the pace on formulating a syllabus. The draft syllabus was uploaded on the MCI web site on July 22 and feedback was sought from relevant stakeholders. By the time the feedback's deadline expired 20 days later, the MCI had received almost 2,000 e-mails with suggestions.

The Maharashtra government had already written a letter to the Union health ministry expressing displeasure over holding the NEET-UG in 2012. And with various stakeholders now knocking on the SC's door the uncertainty over the exam still continues. Various other states, Tamil Nadu being one of them, have also opposed the NEET-UG.

"Just imagine the mental stress these students are going through. This entire year the students have been perplexed over which exam they have to appear for in 2012. It is high time that all stakeholders involved start thinking about the kids first," said Dr Babhulkar.

GU first semester exams postponed to November 30

Saturday, November 05, 2011

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat University (GU) has postponed its first semester exams, scheduled to be held from November 14, to November 30. Nearly 80,000 students will take this exam. This is the first time that the GU will conduct semester exams following the implementation of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in BA, BCom, BSc and BEd courses.
The delay in exams has only amplified the rumours on the GU campus about the complete lack of preparedness on part of the varsity to implement the CBCS system. Right from the beginning, the GU has been confused over finalizing the syllabus, the optional courses to be offered as part of the CBCS as well as taking the semester exams.
Officials said that the last date for accepting exam forms was declared to be October 22 by the GU. However, there was complete lack of coordination between the colleges and the GU. The forms were not submitted in time as initially the college authorities were busy conducting their internal exams. Later, the students went off on Diwali vacation.
The GU opened recently after six days of Diwali vacation. Meanwhile, the university had a tough time dealing with the administrative staff which said it will boycott the exams till their issues are not resolved. Caught in the myriad storms, it is only obvious that the GU was not able to hold the exams on the stipulated date.
Sources in the GU said that the problems faced while implementing the semester system and teaching the syllabus has also led to delay in setting question papers for different streams. The exams were postponed to buy more time.
GU officials, however, saved face by saying that November 14 was declared as a tentative date, but now the final date has been announced as November 30. But the officials agreed that theCBCS system was forced upon the universities this year and is expected to create more trouble in the future as paper checking for the semester exams will take nearly a month and a half, leaving little time for teachers to finish the syllabus.

New IIMs set to break tradition, scrap group discussion round

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

The six new Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are set to make a radical break from tradition by doing away with the group discussion (GD) that forms a crucial part of the selection process at the elite business schools.
The change in the admission process, with a written test replacing the discussion round, will take place at the IIMs in Raipur, Rohtak, Ranchi, Udaipur, Tiruchirappalli and Kashipur in the coming year.
“Instead of going for individual GDs in every single institute, we are going to hold a common written analysis test for all the six new IIMs,” IIM Raipur director B.S. Sahay said.
The seven older IIMs won’t be changing the way in which they currently pick students. Candidates selected after the Common Admission Test (CAT) are called for the GD round in which they are broken up into groups of 8-10 that analyse a particular topic. They may at times be given a case study and asked to come up with a solution. A panel observes the groups and evaluates students based on their contribution to the discussion. A final selection is made after interviews with chosen candidates.
