IIT GATE Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) Exam Details.

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), is an all India examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, on behalf of the National Coordinating Board – GATE, Ministry of Human Resources Development. The test is meant for admission into various Postgraduate Programmes in Engineering/Technology/Science/Pharmacy/Architecture offered by several institutes/universities. Some foreign universities have indicated their interest in GATE qualified candidates. GATE qualified candidates in the engineering disciplines are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories.
Courses
On qualifying IIT-GATE entrance exam candidates can seek admission to the following courses:
  • Master/Doctoral Programmes in Engineering
  • Master/Doctoral Programmes in Technology
  • Master/Doctoral Programmes in Architecture
  • Master/Doctoral Programmes in Pharmacy
  • Doctoral Programmes in Science
Eligibility
Candidates want to appear GATE must fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria as mentioned below:
  • Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/Pharmacy (4 years after 10+2).
  • Candidates who are in the final or pre-final year of their B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch./B.Phrm. can also apply.
  • Candidates having Master’s Degree in Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes can also apply GATE.
  • Candidates in the second or higher year of Four-year Integrated Master’s degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology are also eligible for GATE.
  • Candidates in the third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master’s degree programme and Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology also can apply.
  • Candidates with qualifications equivalent to B.E./B.Tech degree given by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE are also eligible.
Examination Pattern
  • GATE is a single-stage exam followed by interviews. Candidates will be required to appear in a single paper of 3-hours duration.
  • The question paper will consist of only multiple choice objective questions.
  • The GATE examination question paper contains 60 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.
  • Candidates have to mark the correct choice on an Optical Response Sheet (ORS) by darkening the appropriate bubble against each question.
  • There will be negative marking for wrong answers.
  • Candidates can choose any one of the papers listed below:

Syllabus
In GATE exam there are many subjects from which a candidate can choose only one. The syllabus for each of the above mentioned subjects are different.
